Most political observers considered his plans to conquer Europe and exterminate the Jews from the continent as delusions of a dream. In March 1939, at the head of a Kriegsmarine fleet, he sailed to Memel on the battleship Deutschland. It was Hitler’s first voyage with the German Navy, whose aim was to retake Memelland and rejoin East Prussia, the last peaceful territorial gain before the Second World War began. Memelland had been Prussian for 500 years, but had been stripped from Germany (East Prussia) after the First World War by the victorious Allies. To symbolically avenge this punitive act, he made it the primary “Warlord Headquarters”, spending more time than any other place (over 800 days) during WWII, including Berlin and Bergholf near Berchtesgaden in Bavaria.
